چکیده

Mutiibwa, Denis and Irmak, Suat, "AVHRR-NDVI-based crop coefficients for analyzing long-term trends in evapotranspiration in relation to changing climate in the U. [1] Studies in regions of extensive irrigation practices have revealed a significant influence of evaporative cooling on regional temperatures as a result of surface energy redistribution during evaporation. In the U.S. High Plains, maximum temperatures during the last quarter of the 20th century have been decreasing. We investigated the trends in evapotranspiration (ET or latent heat) fluxes originating from increasing irrigation practices in the High Plains region from 1981 to 2008. We estimated actual ET (ETc) over the entire High Plains from the spatial crop coefficients (Kc) and spatial reference (potential) ET (ETref). We proposed and validated a global linear relation between Kc and advanced very high resolution radiometer-based normalized difference vegetation index. Our results show an increase in ETc trends over the region in the last three decades. The study shows that the increase in ETc flux was not in principal from increased atmospheric evaporative demand. Rather, the increase in ETc was due to significant increase in irrigated surfaces. The increase in ETc fluxes is likely a manifestation of increased redistribution of surface energy into latent heat and less partitioning into the sensible heat. We investigated the evolution of full canopy cover vegetation (normalized difference vegetation index >0.70) in relation to the maximum temperature anomalies during the study period. Results revealed a significant negative correlation between the two variables. These results appear to demonstrate that there is a regional evaporative cooling signal due to extensive irrigation practices, which impacts regional temperatures during the summer seasons. AVHRR-NDVI-based crop coefficients for analyzing long-term trends in evapotranspiration in relation to changing climate in the U.

Discriminating Cropping Patterns for the U.s. Central Great Plains Region Using Time-series Modis 250-meter Ndvi Data – Preliminary Results

Agricultural practices are continually changing at various spatial and temporal scales in response to local management decisions and environmental factors. However, few regional scale land use/land cover (LULC) classifications have focused on characterizing the agricultural sector, particularly on a regular basis to reflect croprelated land use changes that occur from year to year. More detaile...

Estimating Crop Coefficients Using Remote Sensing-Based Vegetation Index

Crop coefficient (Kc)-based estimation of crop evapotranspiration is one of the most commonly used methods for irrigation water management. However, uncertainties of the generalized dual crop coefficient (Kc) method of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 56 can contribute to crop evapotranspiration estimates that are substantially diffe...

An analysis of drought events for central plains of Iran through an employment of NOAA-AVHRR data

Drought is a major problematic phenomenon for the mostly semi-arid country of Iran. The north centralregions of Iran (north of Esfahan and Ghom province) have suffered from severe droughts several times duringthe last three decades. The frequent occurrence of drought in these regions is due to low and inconsistentprecipitation, abnormally high temperatures, increases in surface albedo and evapo...

Assessment and analysis of the sensitivity of different methods for estimating of the reference crop evapotranspiration in a cold and moderate climate (Case study: Saqez catchment)

The phenomenon of evapotranspiration causes water and moisture losses from water, soil and vegetation levels. Due to the small amount of atmospheric precipitation and water resource constraints in Iran, it is important to calculate it through a suitable method. The present research attempts to evaluate the evapotranspiration reference crop (ETo) and present it in the form of zoning map as a bas...

Combined Spatial and Temporal Effects of Environmental Controls on Long-Term Monthly NDVI in the Southern Africa Savanna

Deconstructing the drivers of large-scale vegetation change is critical to predicting and managing projected climate and land use changes that will affect regional vegetation cover in degraded or threated ecosystems. We investigate the shared dynamics of spatially variable vegetation across three large watersheds in the southern Africa savanna. Dynamic Factor Analysis (DFA), a multivariate time...
